A clamping device for clamping a rail or rail (12) on a support surface on a gantry crane comprises a cover (14) slidably mounted on a base (13), both secured by a bolt (15), said cover (14) comprising a body (18) and a nose (19) extending transversely outward from the body (18) along a nose axis. The body (18) of the base (13) and of the cover (14) comprises complementary opposing arcuate mating surfaces (21, 22) that enable rotational movement of the cover (14) relative to the base (13) about an axis P extending perpendicular to the nose axis. The base portion (13) and the cover portion (14) of the clamp are always engaged with each other regardless of the position of the nose portion of the clamp, so that the force exerted by the track on the nose portion of the clamp (10) can be directly exerted on the base portion of the clamp (10), thereby providing a clamp which is not liable to fail.
