The invention relates to a method for operating an inertial measurement unit (130) for controlling a support driving function and, in addition or alternatively, an autonomous driving function of a vehicle, the vehicle having at least one airbag controller (110) for controlling an airbag system (205) of the vehicle. The method comprises a step of reading in an information signal (215) from an interface connected to the airbag controller (110), where the information signal (215) represents information of the airbag device (205); a step of determining a potential risk of damage of the inertial measurement unit (130) by using the information signal (215); and a step of outputting a measure signal (215) for introducing a measure when the inertial measurement unit (130) is determined to be potentially damaged.
