The invention provides an elevator capable of further improving the upper end position of the lift car lifting stroke and a lifting stroke extending method. An elevator is provided with: a first lifting path unit which is provided inside a building from the lower part of the building to a roof surface, and in which a first lifting path space extending to the roof surface is formed; a machine room unit that has a hoist that lifts and lowers the car via a rope, and that is capable of moving in the vertical direction inside the first lifting path space of the first lifting path unit; and a second lifting path unit which is provided above the roof surface at the upper end of the first lifting path unit and in which a second lifting path space is formed, the second lifting path space is connected with the upper end of the first lifting path space in a manner that the machine room unit can move in the vertical direction and extends to a position closer to the upper part than the roof surface.
