This document describes techniques and systems for target selection of interest on a road ramp. When a host vehicle transitions from a road to a ramp, a number of lanes of the ramp is determined from a map stored in a driving system of the host vehicle. If a plurality of lanes exist, a standard driving scheme can be adopted. The standard driving scheme may prioritize targets directly in front of the host vehicle to targets of interest. However, if the ramp has a single lane, a first target that is ahead of the host vehicle but not necessarily right ahead of the host vehicle is determined as a target of interest. A driving system, such as adaptive cruise control, may make driving decisions based on a target of interest. By determining the target of interest in this way, uncertainties caused by the complexity of prediction and calculation can be reduced.
