The invention relates to an intelligent vehicle system and control logic for battery thermal event detection and condition severity assessment. Intelligent vehicle systems and control logic for battery thermal event detection and severity assessment, methods of making/using such systems, and vehicles equipped with such systems are presented. A method of operating a vehicle includes detecting a thermal event in at least one battery cell in a battery system of the vehicle by a resident or remote vehicle controller, and monitoring a surrounding area of the vehicle upon detection to detect a target object in the vicinity of the vehicle. In response to detecting any target object in the vicinity of the vehicle, the controller aggregates target object data including a total number of detected target objects and respective proximity of the detected target objects to the vehicle. Using the target object data to estimate a condition severity level for the thermal event; the controller determines whether the severity level exceeds a maximum allowable severity level. If so, the controller responsively commands the vehicle subsystem to perform a control operation to mitigate the event.
