The disclosure relates to battery monitoring techniques. Various techniques are described for determining the rate of self-discharge of one or more battery cells, such as by determining current leakage of a battery cell. These techniques may improve efficient ADC linearity. An example of a technique may calculate the average time when each ADC digital code is observed, such as for a given battery cell or battery module, which allows the cell discharge rate to be estimated from the interval between the average times of observed adjacent (e.g., adjacent) digital codes. This approach allows the calculation of the self-discharge rate of the battery cell at high resolution, even when the total cell voltage offset is only a few least significant bits (LSBs).
