The invention relates to a method for improving the use of a parking space detected by a parking assistance system (1), comprising the following steps: a) detecting the parking space by initially acquiring at least one sub-region of a potentially available parking space by means of a sensor system (2) of a vehicle (F) (S10); b) determining an initial parking area contour (4) and an initial parking area orientation (alpha) for the detected potentially available parking space, and determining a quality criterion for the parking space (S11); c) changing the parking area orientation (alpha) by rotating the initial parking area profile (4) about the vertical axis or a parking area profile derived therefrom, thereby producing a parking area profile (S12) having a changed rotational position; d) calculating a modified quality criterion on the basis of the changed rotational position of the parking area contour (S13); e) checking whether the quality standard of the parking space is improved (S14); f) iteratively repeating steps c) to e) until an abortion criterion is reached (S15); g) determining a final parking target area (5) having a final parking area profile and a final parking area orientation on the basis of the determined highest quality criterion (S16); h) performing a parking process such that the vehicle (F) is parked in the final parking target area (5) (S17).
