The invention provides a gate control circuit for an automotive variable voltage converter. A power converter includes a pair of switches connected in series and a circuit. The circuit includes another switch and an optical coupler that activates in response to a change in current through one of the series-connected switches exceeding a predefined threshold. Activation of the optical coupler turns on the other switch and reduces a gate voltage of the one of the series connected switches to reduce the current variation through the one of the series connected switches.
