The invention relates to a rail vehicle with an intermediate buffer coupler. The intermediate buffer coupler (MPK) has, as elements, a coupler head (KPK), a rod-shaped coupler body (KPS) and a spring mechanism (FDW). The coupler head (KPK) is designed to be connected to a coupler head of a further rail vehicle and to a coupler body (KPS). The coupler body extends into the spring mechanism (FDW) and is supported and fixed in the spring mechanism, so that impact force or tensile force acting on the coupler head (KPK) during working operation of the rail vehicle is elastically absorbed by the spring mechanism (FDW) and transmitted to the carriage (WK). The support part (PAS) is coupled to the coupler body (KPS) and is connected to the vehicle compartment (WK). A crash element (CB) is arranged between the support part (ABS) and the vehicle compartment (WK), said crash element being fixedly but detachably connected both to the support part (ABS) and to the vehicle compartment (WK). The collision element (CB) has a deformation region (DB) which is designed in such a way that in the event of a collision, kinetic energy transmitted to the collision element (CB) via the coupler body (KPS) and via the coupled support part (PAS) irreversibly deforms the deformation region (DB) in a predetermined manner.
