Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to systems and methods for transitioning between an autonomous driving mode and a manual driving mode based on driver controlled vehicle capabilities. A system and method for transitioning between an autonomous driving mode and a manual driving mode based on detection of a driver's ability to control a vehicle is disclosed. Particular embodiments include receiving sensor data relating to a vehicle driver's ability to manually control an autonomous vehicle; determining, based on the sensor data, whether the driver has the ability to manually control the autonomous vehicle, the determining including prompting the driver to perform an action or provide an input; and outputting the vehicle control transition signal to a vehicle subsystem to cause the vehicle subsystem to act based on the driver's ability to manually control the autonomous vehicle.
