When a steel plate is lifted by a lifting magnet, the magnetic flux penetration depth is controlled with high precision according to the thickness of the steel plate and the number of lifted steel plates, and the desired number of steel plates are lifted reliably and stably regardless of the thickness of the steel plate. A lifting magnet (1) is used which is provided with a plurality of electromagnet coils (2) capable of independently performing ON-OFF control and voltage control, and magnetic poles (3) excited by applying a voltage to the electromagnet coils (2), and the electromagnet coils (2) used for lifting a steel plate are determined on the basis of the sum of the plate thicknesses of the steel plate to be lifted. When the electromagnet coil (2) is used, the passing magnetic flux (phi r) in the magnetic pole (3) when the magnetic flux only passes through the steel plate to be lifted is calculated, the applied voltage applied to the electromagnet coil (2) used for lifting the steel plate is determined on the basis of the passing magnetic flux (phi r), and the applied voltage is applied to the electromagnet coil (2).
