A battery management system for an electric vehicle includes a high voltage battery, a low voltage battery, and a bidirectional converter. The bidirectional converter is configured to connect the high voltage battery to the low voltage battery and generate a power flow between the high voltage battery and the low voltage battery. The bidirectional converter is further configured to monitor a first voltage associated with the high-voltage battery and a second voltage associated with the low-voltage battery, and to control a voltage ratio of the first voltage to the second voltage to be maintained in a predetermined range by controlling a power flow between the high-voltage battery and the low-voltage battery.
