The invention provides a head and tail redundancy positioning system and method. The head and tail redundancy positioning system comprises two sets of speed and distance measuring systems arranged at the head end and the tail end of a train respectively, two sets of transponder positioning systems arranged at the head end and the tail end of the train respectively, and a train control system positioning redundancy processing unit. Wherein the speed measurement and distance measurement system comprises a plurality of different sensors, and the plurality of different sensors are used for respectively obtaining speed measurement and distance measurement data; the train control system positioning redundancy processing unit is used for carrying out train positioning based on train operation speed information and/or acceleration information and transponder information from the transponder positioning system, and the train operation speed information and/or acceleration information are/is obtained based on fusion of the speed measurement and distance measurement data.
