A system for a fuel cell vehicle includes a plurality of fuel cell modules, a plurality of battery packs, and a controller. Wherein the state of health (SOH) of at least one fuel cell module is different from the respective SOH of the other fuel cell modules. Each battery pack in turn includes a plurality of battery cells, wherein the SOH of at least one battery pack is different from the respective SOH of the other battery packs. The controller monitors and controls the operation of the fuel cell modules and the battery packs via a communication link. The controller is configured to receive a power demand and determine a power split between the fuel cell modules and the battery packs according to an operating phase of the vehicle.
