The invention discloses a vehicle lateral collision early warning system and method based on information fusion. The collision early warning system comprises a signal acquisition module, a vehicle state estimation module, a vehicle track prediction module and a vehicle collision early warning module. The signal acquisition module detects the relative position of a target vehicle relative to the vehicle, and outputs the relative position as a measurement variable to the vehicle state estimation module; the vehicle track prediction module estimates the relative motion track of the vehicle as the input of the vehicle collision early warning module; the vehicle collision early warning module calculates the critical value of the square sum arithmetic square root of the transverse distance and the longitudinal distance of the target vehicle relative to the vehicle within the safe collision early warning time, and therefore whether the lateral collision risk exists or not is judged.
