Disclosed is a method for controlling the lateral position of a vehicle (1) on a roadway, comprising:-a first control step following a first reference trajectory (TR1), and-a step of alerting the driver when the lateral distance of the vehicle from the edge of the roadway is less than a first threshold value, a step of detecting a command applied to the steering wheel of the vehicle, followed by a second control step of following a second reference trajectory (TR2) determined from the command applied to the steering wheel, and a step of alerting the driver when the lateral distance of the vehicle from the edge of the roadway is less than a second threshold value, the second threshold value is smaller than the first threshold value.
