An elevator self-adjusting counterweight system based on push rods comprises a wheel type counterweight car set, a counterweight supporting plate, a hoistway side electric push rod, a landing side electric push rod, a car load capacity sensor and a counterweight controller. The counterweight supporting plate is divided into two parts, namely a hoistway side counterweight supporting plate and a landing side counterweight supporting plate which are respectively placed on the landing ground and the corresponding car side and are arranged in a row perpendicular to the car door; the hoistway side counterweight supporting plate is connected to one end of the hoisting rope; when the car stops at a certain landing, the hoistway side counterweight supporting plate faces one landing; the landing side counterweight supporting plate is placed on each landing; the wheel type counterweight vehicle group consists of a plurality of counterweight vehicles; the car load capacity sensor is placed in the car and used for detecting the load capacity of the car.
