Described herein is a fuel cell and battery hybrid system (1) comprising one or more groups of fuel cells (FC1-n) connected in series. One or more groups (2) of series-connected fuel cells (FC1-n) are further connected in series via respective fuel cell series boosters (3). The series-connected group (2) is further connected in parallel with the battery (4) via a fuel cell charge controller (5). Each respective group (2) of series-connected fuel cells (FC1-n) is further arranged to be controlled by a fuel cell series booster (3) to operate electrically independently of other groups (2) of series-connected fuel cells (FC1-n) and at its own unique maximum power point or at a unique selected other operating point, however, the operating point of the other group (2) of fuel cells (FC1-n) connected in series is independent of the operating point of the other group (2).
