The invention relates to a method and a control device for operating a drive train of a motor vehicle. A group transmission; and a separation clutch connected therebetween. In order to carry out the downshift, the following steps are carried out: opening the disconnect clutch and shifting the partial transmission to be shifted into neutral. Then, in order to shift the partial transmission to be shifted into the target gear, a target rotational speed is specified for the input shaft and the drive unit of the group transmission, and in order to synchronize the form-fitting shift elements to be closed of the partial transmission to be shifted, the target rotational speed is shifted into the target gear. The drive unit is actuated in dependence on the target rotational speed and the disconnect clutch is shifted to a first position transmitting the first torque. The actual rotational speed established at the input shaft during synchronization is monitored, the disconnect clutch is shifted to a second position transmitting a second torque when the rotational speed difference between the actual rotational speed of the input shaft and the target rotational speed is greater than a threshold value, the transmission brake is actuated to be closed in order to reduce the rotational speed difference, and the form-fitting shift element to be closed is closed.
