A method and system for vehicle uphill control are provided. An example of a method may include during a vehicle stop condition, operating with a clutch of a transmission engaged to mechanically lock the transmission, the transmission having a plurality of power inputs, including an input that receives input from an electric machine and a prime mover; at least one of the clutch or the service brake is released, and while released, an output amplitude of the electric machine is simultaneously adjusted in response to the speed control to control at zero vehicle speed. In some examples, the method may further include learning a torque output of the electric machine required to maintain zero vehicle speed when the clutch or service brake is fully released. In one example, the method may include estimating a road grade based on a learned torque output.
