The invention relates to a method for reporting that a charging station (1) is occupied by a parked motor vehicle (2), in which a message (3, 16) is output to a user (4) of the motor vehicle (2) and/or to a device (5, 6) external to the charging station when a trigger condition is satisfied, and in which the message (3, 16) is output to the user (4) of the motor vehicle (2) and/or to a device (5, 6) external to the charging station (1) when or only when an additional condition (10, 19) is satisfied after a sensor device (8, 9) has detected that a parking space (7) associated with the charging station (1) has been occupied. If the motor vehicle (2) is charged by the charging station (1), a trigger condition is satisfied, and if or only if image data (11) provided by the sensor device (8, 9) and/or a further sensor device is evaluated, additional conditions (10, 19) are satisfied: on the one hand, no feature (12) characterizing that the motor vehicle (2) is likely to be suitable for charging by the charging station (1) is identified, and/or on the other hand, no feature (12) is identified for charging by the charging station (1). The charging connection (16) of the charging station (1) is not connected to the charging connection (17) of the motor vehicle (1) at a predetermined minimum time (15) immediately after detecting that the motor vehicle (2) has occupied the parking space (7).
