The invention relates to a system and method for efficient DC fast charging. In an exemplary embodiment, the present disclosure provides a direct current (DC) fast charger (DCFC) controller unit that includes a controller. The controller includes a processor and a computer readable medium. The computer readable medium is configured to store computer executable instructions configured to cause the processor to: receive, in response to enabling an improved efficiency charging mode, a maximum charging period of time to charge at least one battery to a desired state of charge; determining an amount of energy used in a plurality of charging cycles for charging the at least one battery to the desired state of charge for a charging period of time that does not exceed the maximum charging period of time; selecting a charge cycle for charging the at least one battery to the desired state of charge with the minimum amount of energy used; and charging the at least one battery with the selected charging cycle.
