A number of illustrative variations may include a system that includes a brake steering algorithm that may enable lateral control of a vehicle without longitudinal compensation, but may also force the vehicle to decelerate too fast before appropriate lateral motion may be achieved, and may bring an unnatural driving experience to a vehicle occupant. By optimally selecting an appropriate transmission shift based on the current vehicle speed to achieve optimal engine speed or motor speed and torque to reduce undesirable longitudinal perturbations, more naturally perceived deceleration may be achieved.
