The invention relates to a method for regulating a PTC heater having at least one PTC heating element and having a control unit for controlling the respective PTC heating elements. In the method, a control unit controls each PTC heating element to a target output by means of a control variable. At a predetermined target output of the control unit, each PTC heating element receives the electrical input power and emits thermal heating output to the environment. According to the invention, in the test step, the control unit keeps the target output constant for a predefined stationary duration and checks whether each PTC heating element is in a critical unbalanced state in which each PTC heating element is self-adjusted by increasing its resistance. After the testing step, when the control unit detects a critical imbalance state of each PTC heating element, the control unit reduces the target output power in the adjusting step. The invention also relates to a PTC heater having at least one PTC heating element and a control unit for carrying out the method.
