An emissions management system for an engine in a hybrid powertrain system includes a sensor assembly and a controller. The sensor assembly is configured to provide an activation signal and detect emissions information in response to an engine start event, including information indicative of engine power, driver demand power, catalyst temperature, battery state of charge, and battery temperature. The controller is in communication with the sensor assembly and is configured to: receive the activation signal and in response receive emissions information from the sensor assembly; determining an emission reduction mode, the emission reduction mode having a threshold for a catalyst temperature and having an engine power corresponding to the emission reduction mode; monitoring emission information; comparing the catalyst temperature to a threshold value; operating the engine in an emission reduction mode when the catalyst temperature is below a threshold; and allowing the engine to operate in a normal operating mode when the catalyst temperature is greater than or equal to the threshold.
