The present technology relates to classifying road humidity and/or performing a regression analysis on road humidity based on a set of input information using in-vehicle sensor data (1002A), off-vehicle information (1002B), and a deep learning model (1008). Such information includes on-board (802) and/or off-board signals (804) obtained from one or more sources including on-board perception sensors, other on-board modules, external weather measurements, external weather services, etc. The reference truth includes measurements of water film thickness and/or ice coverage on the road surface. The reference true value, the vehicle-mounted signal and the non-vehicle-mounted signal are used for establishing a model. The constructed model may be deployed in an autonomous vehicle for classifying/regressing (1016) road humidity using on-board and/or off-board signals as input without referencing datum truth values. The model may be applied in various ways to enhance autonomous vehicle operation, such as by altering a current driving action, modifying a planned route or trajectory, activating an in-vehicle cleaning system, and the like.
