The invention relates to an electromechanical brake system comprising a brake actuator (2) having a power transmission device for transmitting a driving force to a brake pad, said power transmission device comprising a rotatable shaft (81); a coupling device having a locking element (35) wherein the coupling device can be controlled to engage and prevent rotation of the locking element (35) with the rotatable shaft (81), or to disengage the locking element (35) from the rotatable shaft (81) such that the rotatable shaft (81) can be rotated, wherein the brake actuator (2) comprises an interface (31) for coupling the locking element (35) to the rotatable shaft (81) and to disengage the locking element (35) from the rotatable shaft (81) such that the rotatable shaft (81) can be rotated, the interface is configured to be connectable with the locking element (35) and to engage or disengage the locking element (35) with or from the rotatable shaft (81).
