The present disclosure provides a "detained driver assistance system". A help system for a vehicle occupant carrying a mobile communication device is provided. A vehicle has a transceiver that provides bi-directional wireless telecommunications and detects a signal loss condition. A powertrain provides vehicle movement and is configured to estimate a path traveled by the vehicle. The help system includes a boot controller and an interface adapted to connect to the mobile communication device. The guidance controller is configured to: A) identify an intersection when the transceiver detects that the signal loss condition begins, B) store a breadcrumb route for returning to the intersection based on an estimated path, C) detect a retention condition of the vehicle during the signal loss condition, D) determine whether the signal loss condition begins when the retention condition is detected, and D) determine whether the signal loss condition begins when the signal loss condition is detected. Generating guidance instructions including the breadcrumb route from the vehicle to the intersection, and E) transmitting the guidance instructions to the mobile communication device.
