The invention provides a ductless thrust generating system for an aircraft. The aircraft includes a fuselage, a wing connected to and extending outwardly from the fuselage, and an engine mounted to the wing. The engine includes a turbine defining a centerline axis, a fan, and an exhaust section having an outlet nozzle. The turbine defines a centerline axis. A fan is connected to the turbine and disposed upstream of the turbine. The fan is arranged to rotate about the centerline axis. During engine operation, an exhaust flow is discharged from an outlet nozzle of the exhaust section. The exhaust flow defines an average flow direction in a downstream direction of the exhaust section. The average flow direction defines a first angle with a centerline axis of the turbine greater than zero such that the centerline axis is oriented downward in a vertical direction relative to the average flow direction of the exhaust flow.
