The present disclosure provides battery internal short detection and mitigation. The controller selectively prevents power from flowing from the traction battery to the electric machine based on an actual charging rate obtained by an actual increase per unit ampere-hour of a battery cell of the traction battery and an expected charging rate obtained by an expected increase per unit ampere-hour.
