A method of operating a heat transfer system includes circulating a heat transfer fluid through a heat transfer loop in fluid communication with an electrical system, and obtaining real-time measurements of a fluid characteristic of the heat transfer fluid. A dimensional effectiveness factor (DEF fluid) of the heat transfer fluid is calculated based on fluid characteristics and selected pumps and selected primary flow regimes within the heat transfer circuit, and a dimensional effectiveness factor (DEF reference) of the reference fluid is calculated for selected pumps and selected primary flow regimes within the heat transfer circuit. A normalized effectiveness factor, NEF, fluid of the heat transfer fluid is thus obtained, thereby obtaining a condition of the heat transfer fluid. If the NEF fluid is below a predetermined threshold, the condition is deemed to deteriorate, and if the NEF fluid is above the predetermined threshold, the condition is deemed to be feasible.
