A virtual visor system mounted to a vehicle with an optimized barrier pattern is provided. A virtual visor system is disclosed that includes a visor having a plurality of independently operable pixels that selectively operate with a variable opacity. The camera captures a face image of the driver or other passenger, and based on the captured image, the controller operates the visor to automatically and selectively darken a limited portion thereof to block the sun or other illumination source from entering the driver's eyes while keeping the remainder of the visor transparent. The virtual visor system advantageously updates the optical state with a barrier pattern that includes more than a filling that is strictly necessary for blocking sunlight. This filling advantageously provides robustness against errors, allows for a more relaxed response time, and minimizes frequent small changes in barrier position in the optical state of the visor.
