The invention relates to a battery module (1) for a traction battery (2) of a motor vehicle (3), comprising: a plurality of battery cells (4), which together form a cell stack (5) having a stacking direction (S); a hydraulic pressure device (6) for generating a pressure which presses the battery cells together in the stacking direction (S); a control interface (7) for coupling to a control device (8) of the traction battery (2) in order to control the pressure device (6) in a targeted manner in order to generate a defined target pressure value, the hydraulic pressure device having: a pressure chamber (9) for receiving a hydraulic pressure medium, which has a chamber wall (10); and a pressure plunger (11) guided along the chamber wall for transmitting the pressure of the pressure device. The pressure device has a pressure-limiting valve (12), the pressure-limiting valve being designed to close in the event of a lower pressure than a maximum pressure value in the pressure chamber and to open in the event of a higher pressure than the maximum pressure value and to discharge at least part of the pressure medium from the pressure chamber. The invention also relates to a traction battery and to a motor vehicle.
