A multi-rotor unmanned aerial vehicle ("UAV") is provided, including a method of operating it such that it can park on a surface in an environment without additional equipment, thereby saving energy. The UAV has a frame supporting at least four variable speed reversible motors spaced about the frame. Each motor drives a propeller arranged to hover the frame. A sensor is disposed on the UAV for detecting a distance between the UAV and a target surface. A computer is provided for executing software modules to control operation of the motor to cause the UAV to perform flight actions including at least: (a) approaching a target surface, (b) using a "ceiling effect" to contact the target surface to park on the surface and reduce energy consumption of the UAV, and (c) disengaging from the target surface.
