The invention provides a method and a device for detecting a passable area of a vehicle, relates to the field of automatic driving, and is used for determining a target boundary grid unit according to at least two boundary grid units so as to shear the passable area of the vehicle and improve the accuracy of the passable area detection of the vehicle. The method comprises the steps that at least two boundary grid units are determined from multiple grid units, the at least two boundary grid units are grid units where obstacles closest to a vehicle are located on the same azimuth angle, and the multiple grid units are obtained by dividing the surrounding area where the vehicle is located; determining a target boundary grid unit from the at least two boundary grid units, wherein the target boundary grid unit refers to a grid unit where the boundary of the passable area of the vehicle is located; and determining an area between the target boundary grid unit and the vehicle as a passable area of the vehicle.
