The application relates to a motor vehicle brake lining loss monitoring system, the motor vehicle comprising: a brake device acting on a wheel, the brake device having a lining that is non-rotatable relative to the wheel but is linearly movable parallel to a rotational axis of the wheel; the brake piston can drive the friction plate to move; and an electronic parking brake or an electronic mechanical brake having a drive motor and a piston driving member driven by the drive motor to move linearly, the method comprising: after the motor vehicle is parked, operating the drive motor to move the piston driving member to a predetermined reference position; the driving motor is operated again, so that the piston driving piece moves from the reference position to a stopping position where the piston driving piece makes contact with the braking piston, and the stopping position corresponds to the parking braking position of the braking piston; determining the distance between the reference position and the stop position; and comparing the determined distance with a predetermined reference distance to determine the wear thickness of the friction plate to be measured.
