A lightweight, pocket-sized unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that can be held by a user in an extended palm to take off and land the unmanned aerial vehicle. The UAV includes a hollow body that is semi-annular or substantially annular, the body defining a channel. The UAV also includes a motor for rotating a fan that introduces air into or out of the channel to effect takeoff of the UAV. The UAV includes a flight control system that includes at least two flight control surfaces that can change air flow through a channel to control rollover, pitch, and optional yaw of the UAV during flight. The flight control system may be controlled by a microprocessor controller. The UAV also includes a load configured with at least one wireless transmit and receive unit.
