A method of estimating a maximum power limit for a battery cell at a specified predicted time using an improved RC equivalent circuit battery model and based on a state of charge (SOC), temperature, and state of health (SOH) of the battery cell. The method includes determining peak and continuous current limits of the battery cell, predicting a peak voltage after a specified prediction time based on the peak current limits, determining a buffer value of the predicted peak voltage and temperatures of various battery components, setting a maximum current limit based on the buffer value, and determining a temperature of the battery cell based on the maximum current limit. A maximum voltage after a specified prediction time is predicted based on the maximum current limit, and a maximum power limit is determined based on the predicted maximum voltage and the maximum current limit.
