According to a method for operating an autonomous vehicle (1), task information (9) is received by a task control unit (3) from a server computer system (5). The driving operation according to the route is controlled by a driving control unit (4) of the autonomous vehicle (1). The task control unit (3) selects a set of routines (10), wherein each routine of the set of routines (10) defines at least one automotive function (11); at least for a subset of the set of routines (10), the task control unit (3) triggers at least one automotive function (11) of the respective routine via an interface (6) which couples the task control unit (3) to at least one function control unit (7a, 7b, 7c) of the autonomous vehicle (1).
