The invention relates to a battery management system for an electric air vehicle and an air vehicle, in particular to a battery management system for observing the battery system state and the battery health state of an energy storage system of an air vehicle for an electric air vehicle such as an eVTOL aircraft. Based on the observation, a state prediction, in particular a prediction of the remaining available energy, takes place during the flight. Observation and prediction are performed by two independent and dissimilar channels of the battery management system. The first channel predicts a battery state from a predefined flight profile representing a worst case scenario. The second channel predicts a battery state according to the planned flight profile to determine a flight range. Accordingly, it can be confirmed during flight that the expected destination can be safely reached using the remaining available energy. Otherwise, an alert is issued to the operator requiring it to immediately deviate to the nearest alternative airport for landing. Therefore, complete redundancy of prediction is realized, and single-point faults causing disastrous events are eliminated.
