A battery management system according to the present invention comprises: a voltage sensor for generating a voltage signal indicative of a battery voltage; a current sensor for generating a current signal indicative of a current flowing through the battery; and a control unit that records a voltage history and a current history of the battery based on the voltage signal and the current signal every predetermined time interval while charging the battery with the constant current. The control unit determines a differential capacity curve indicating a correspondence relationship between a voltage of the battery and the differential capacity within a reference voltage range. When a main feature point is detected from the differential capacity curve, the controller compares a first feature voltage of the main feature point with a reference voltage, and performs a first protection operation on the battery.
