The present disclosure provides "hybrid vehicle operation". A powertrain control system includes a controller that prohibits starting an engine when attribute data indicates that an expected deceleration has a magnitude exceeding a threshold within a predefined duration after receiving an engine start request, and that prohibits starting of the engine when attribute data indicates that an expected deceleration has a magnitude exceeding a threshold within a predefined duration after receiving an engine start request. And allowing the engine to be started when the attribute data indicates that an expected deceleration has an amplitude that does not exceed the threshold for the predefined duration.
