The invention relates to deceleration cylinder shut-off in a hybrid vehicle. Methods and arrangements for transitioning an engine between a deceleration cylinder shut-off (DCCO) state and an operating state are described. In one aspect, transitions from DCCO begin with reactivating cylinders to pump air to reduce pressure in the intake manifold prior to firing any cylinders. In another aspect, transitions from DCCO involve the use of an air pumping jump fire mode of operation. After the manifold pressure has been reduced, the engine may transition to a cylinder deactivation jump fire mode of operation or other suitable mode of operation. In yet another aspect, a method of transitioning to DCCO using a skip fire method is described. In this aspect, the fraction of the duty cycle that is ignited is gradually reduced to a threshold ignition fraction. Then, after the threshold firing fraction is reached, all of the working chambers are deactivated.
