A mobile automated guided vehicle pallet stacker and unstacker system includes an automated guided vehicle having a pallet picker that moves to pick up pallets and stably hold the picked-up pallets on the picker. A sensor is connected to the vehicle and configured to detect a predetermined characteristic of at least one tray located in a stack of one or more trays. A sensing element of the sensor is mounted to the vehicle so as to define a predetermined relationship between the sensing element and a tray pickup interface. Actuating the pick-up enables scanning of the stack and detection of the predetermined characteristic with the sensing element. A controller determines that the at least one tray is at a topmost tray position of the stack based on the predetermined characteristic, and positions the tray pickup interface of the picker to couple the stack based on the determined topmost tray position.
