First, a condition message (58) is received from an electric drive (44) of the commercial vehicle (12) or of a trailer (16) towed by the commercial vehicle (12), said condition message indicating that an available braking torque (76) can be provided with the electric drive. A notification message (60) indicating a notification braking torque (77) is then generated as a function of the status message (58). The notification message (60) is then sent to or to at least one further control unit (32) of the utility vehicle (12). The invention further comprises a brake control unit (18) and a brake system for carrying out the method, and a utility vehicle (12) or a combination of vehicles (10) having a brake control unit (18) or a brake system. Finally, the invention comprises a computer program product for performing the method.
