A periphery monitoring system for a work machine is provided with a display control unit that displays, on a display unit, an image indicating the periphery of the work machine, and a reference line disposed in at least a portion of the periphery of the work machine in the image. The display control unit switches the display state of the reference line between an active state in which an alarm is output in accordance with the presence of an object around the work machine and an inactive state in which no alarm is output.
