The invention relates to a vehicle cliff and crack detection system and method. A system and method utilize a sensor assembly coupled to a vehicle and adapted to detect a cliff or crack of a predetermined depth within a predetermined distance adjacent to the vehicle; and a display visible to an occupant within the vehicle and adapted to provide an alert to the occupant when the sensor assembly detects a cliff or crack of the predetermined depth adjacent to the vehicle within the predetermined distance. The sensor assembly includes a sensor device coupled to a processor, the sensor device and the processor collectively adapted to detect a cliff or crack of a predetermined depth within a predetermined distance adjacent the vehicle. The sensor device includes one of an ultrasonic sensor, a radar sensor, a lidar sensor, and a camera. The warnings include one or more of visual warnings, audible warnings and tactile warnings.
