The present disclosure provides for aggregating braking torque during a single pedal driving mode. A vehicle includes: a powertrain having an electric machine configured to provide power to a driven wheel; an accelerator pedal; and a friction brake. The vehicle controller is programmed to, with the vehicle in a single pedal driving mode, command a torque from the powertrain equal to a target braking torque based on a position of an accelerator pedal in response to a braking torque capacity of the powertrain exceeding the target braking torque, such that the vehicle is decelerated using the powertrain without applying the friction brake; and in response to the braking torque capacity of the powertrain being less than the target braking torque, commanding torque from the powertrain and the friction brake such that the target braking torque is satisfied and the vehicle is decelerated using the powertrain and the friction brake.
