This shock absorber is provided with a flow path (an oil path of a piston) in which a work fluid flows with movement of the piston rod, and a damping force adjustable valve which is disposed in the flow path and in which the opening/closing action is adjusted by a solenoid. In the flow path, in series with the damping force adjustable valve, a frequency sensitive mechanism is provided which reduces the damping force for high-frequency vibration. In the frequency sensitive mechanism, a second valve mechanism (a compression-side damping force generating valve and an expansion-side damping force generating valve) is provided which exerts resistance to the flow of the work fluid from an upstream-side chamber (an upper chamber or a lower chamber) to a downstream-side chamber (the lower chamber or the upper chamber).
