The method comprises the following steps that S1, the number of people on an escalator, the pedestrian passing condition in front of an entrance of the escalator and the pedestrian flow rate in front of an exit of the escalator are detected; S2, the running speed of the escalator is controlled according to the number of people on the escalator, when the number of people on the escalator is zero, the escalator runs at a low-speed threshold value, and when the number of people on the escalator is not zero, the escalator runs at a high-speed threshold value; S3, when the escalator runs at the low-speed threshold value and pedestrians pass through the entrance of the escalator, the characteristics of the pedestrians in front of the entrance of the escalator are detected; S4, interval time for changing the running speed of the escalator is generated according to the characteristics of the pedestrians; and S5, after the interval time for changing the running speed of the escalator, the running speed of the escalator is controlled to be changed from the low-speed threshold value to the high-speed threshold value. According to the method, the interval time for changing the running speed of the escalator can be generated according to the characteristics of the pedestrians in front of the entrance of the escalator.
